Former hockey striker Clark Gillies has died at the age of 67. The information about his death was confirmed on the official website of the New York Islanders club, in which he ranked among the greatest legends. They did not disclose the cause of death.

Gillies was one of the mainstays of the Islanders dynasty in the 1980s, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the NHL four times between 1980 and 1983. In the “Islanders” jersey, he shone in an attack known as the “Trio Grande” with midfielder Brian Trottier and right-winger Mike Bossy. The Islanders eliminated Gillies’ number 9 in 1996, an eight player in the club’s history.

Gillies was a fourth-round draft pick in 1974 and immediately caught up in the NHL. Individually, he was most successful in the 1978/1979 season, in which he played 75 matches in the basic part with a gain of 91 points (35 + 56). However, the greatest success came in the early 80’s. He played a total of 14 seasons in the NHL. After 12 years in Islanders colors, he closed his two-year career at the Buffalo Sabers.

In the regular part of the NHL, he played 958 matches with a balance of 319 goals, 378 assists and 1,023 penalty minutes. In 164 playoff matches, he had a balance of 47 + 47. In the 1981/1982 season, he represented Canada in the Canadian Cup. He has been a member of the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame since 2002.

After retiring from hockey, he did not enter the coach or manager, but he remained in contact with the Islanders community. He has set up charitable projects to help children who are physically, developmentally or financially disadvantaged. His name is borne by a pediatric unit in one of New York’s hospitals after the Gillies Foundation raised a million euros to fund it.

“I think he embodied everything the New York Islanders Club did. He brought peace when he entered the room. He was extremely charismatic. I remember the moment I first met him. I told myself I wanted to be like that when I grew up. He was an amazing man. ” said the defender of the “islanders” Matt Martin, who learned about the death of the club legend after Friday’s home match with Arizona (4: 0).

“The entire Islanders community is crushed by the loss of Clark Gillies. The pride he felt wearing this club’s jersey gave him the strength to do anything for victory. He was just as exceptional off the ice. He always took the time to work with the local community. Islanders they are a famous club with four Stanley Cups also thanks to the great devotion of Clark Gillies, “ said general manager Lou Lamoriello.
