The first square meter of urban meadows sown in Victory Park Press release

The first square meter of urban meadows is sown in Victory Park

October 21, 2020

The information was prepared by Ilze Krūkle, project coordinator of the Public Relations Department of the Riga City Council.

On Wednesday, October 21, the first symbolic square meter of biologically valuable grass was sown in Victory Park on the bank of Mārupīte and a letter of intent was signed on the support of the municipality for the movement “Sow your square meter!”. The event was attended by Edmunds Cepurītis, Chairman of the Housing and Environment Committee of Riga City Council and Selīna Vancāne, Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Aivars Tauriņš, Chairman of the Board of SIA “Rīgas meži” and Uldis Zommers, Member of the Board, Inga Račinska, Head of GrassLIFE

E. Cepurītis: “Nature in Riga must be closer. This means not only smoothly mowed grasslands, but nature in all its diversity. Riga’s task is to serve as an example of how high biodiversity can coexist with city life and promote the well-being of its citizens.”

A. Tauriņš: “This is only the first step towards wide biologically valuable meadows in the urban environment. Last year, according to the recommendations of the Latvian Fund for Nature, we sowed buckwheat and flax in the new sakura plantation, which was liked not only by park visitors, but also by bees.”

Plants such as northern madara, meadow bee, willow stork, meadow wolverine and others will bloom in the square meter of meadow sown this autumn. Until next summer, the Latvian Fund for Nature and SIA “Rīgas meži” are aware of the parks in which it is possible to create larger areas of natural meadow flowers, what seeds need to be collected for these purposes and will work on a long-term plan for meadows entering the city.
