Books – Ahmed Jumaa:

Dr. Ayman Imam, Director General of Quarantine, Ministry of Health, said that the decision to stop importing garlic from China is among the strict precautionary measures taken by Egypt to prevent the infiltration of the new Corona virus into the country.

This comes after the Vegetable Division of the Chambers of Commerce announced that Chinese garlic importers have decided to stop importing Chinese garlic due to fears of the Corona virus, which has recently spread widely in a number of Chinese cities, leaving thousands of infected people, and more than 360 deaths so far.

“We are taking more precautionary measures, and for this reason we are clearing containers from China even though the virus does not transmit like this currently, but in anticipation of the virus mutating,” added the director of quarantine for Masrawy.

On the transmission of the Corona virus through plant foods, he explained, “It is premature to know all the details of the transmission of the virus, but it has not yet been established that plant food supplies the virus.”

Earlier, Hatem El-Nagib, deputy head of the Vegetables Division of the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, confirmed that the currently available Chinese garlic is completely safe and was imported before the disease appeared in China.

And Najib continued, that stopping the import of Chinese garlic will not affect prices in the local markets, especially as the new crop of municipal garlic will be present in the markets during the next two weeks to meet the needs of the consumer.

Egypt does not import food from China, except for some quantities of garlic, and the rest are industrial products, according to Dr. Hussein Mansour, head of the Food Safety Authority, to Masrawy.
