– The first death occurred among confirmed prisoners of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) in the Seoul East Detention Center.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 29th, Mr. A, who was convicted of Corona 19 while living in an eastern detention center, died during treatment at the Life Therapy Center in the early morning of the 27th.
Mr. A was released from the prison due to the decision to suspend execution on the 24th after being confirmed as Corona 19. Mr. A was a severe hemodialysis patient and had an underlying disease. Currently, the health authorities are investigating the exact cause of Mr. A’s death.
In the eastern detention center, on the 27th of last month, one employee was diagnosed with corona for the first time. On the 15th of this month, a total of 15 people, including 14 employees and one prisoner, were found to have been infected. Only three days later, on the 18th, the first full examination was conducted, and a total of 756 people were confirmed.
The Ministry of Justice clarified the reason why the thorough investigation was conducted only on the 18th, “The detention center actively raised the need for a thorough examination, but the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Songpa-gu gave an opinion that it would be better to decide according to future trends.”
As the number of confirmed cases related to the Dongbu detention center continues to increase, some point out whether it was actually done in the timing and method of full inspection. There were also criticisms of not being given enough masks to prisoners.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae visited the Eastern Detention Center at 2 pm on the same day and asked the employees to do their best to prevent the spread of Corona 19.
