The first aerodynamic Škoda celebrates 85 years

Aerodynamic shapes, round lights and a teardrop-like jet body. In the interwar times, such features were characterized by vehicles that left the Tatra factory in Kopřivnice. It was timeless and is still technically appreciated by the professional car community.

However, the Kopřivnice engineers were not the only ones who could do similar things in the Czech Republic. In Mladá Boleslav, they also wanted to keep up with the times.

Škoda began to flirt with aerodynamic shapes in about 1932, when it began developing a model called the 932. Its main domain, however, was not the shape, but a four-cylinder boxer engine, which had opposite cylinders and was stored at the rear. But the car did not grow into beauty. This was not until a few years later, when the designers built a prototype 935 Dynamic on its foundations and, in part, the technology.

For the first time, a timeless-looking model was presented at the 25th Prague Motor Show in Holešovice, where the car shocked practically every visitor. At that time, Tatra was not the only manufacturer of “elegant” cars. The similarity to the Kopřivnice models is, after all, indisputable. But we can only guess today whether the engineers from Škoda described a bit.

The renovation of the Škoda 935 Dynamic took several years. It was introduced in 2015.

However, the car itself was and still is a beautiful example of the top technology and design of the interwar period. Thanks to the rounded hood, the car had incredible air resistance numbers of 0.37.

Under the hood was the already mentioned rear-mounted boxer engine with four cylinders and a capacity of 1995 cubic centimeters, which was able to move the car to drive up to 130 km / h, which was a respectable number at the time. Not to mention the French electromagnetic transmission Cotal. In the interwar period, it was unique, had a preselection and thus allowed semi-automatic shifting.

Initially, Škoda planned to involve Auto Auto in production, but this plan fell through. In Mladá Boleslav, they simply did not know whether someone would buy such an extravagant car at that time. Subsequently, the engineers thought of turning the prototype into a race car, which was to take part in the famous Monte-Carlo Rally. However, the plans fell through and this project fell into oblivion in 1939.

The Škoda 935 Dynamic was created as a unique model, which the carmaker sold to a private owner in 1939. In the 1960s, however, Škoda bought it into its ownership. The car has been waiting for many years for renovation. The car received its fame in its original form in 2015. Today it is exhibited in the Škoda car museum in Mladá Boleslav.
