The famous green-eyed afghan girl of a magazine National Geographic has arrived in Italy as part of the evacuation of Afghans from the West after the Taliban took over the country, the Italian government announced on Thursday, the AP reported.
From the office of Prime Minister Mario Dear said that Italy has organized the evacuation of Sharbat Gula after she asked for help to leave the country. The Italian government will now help integrate into Italy, the statement said.
Gula gained international fame in 1984. as a girl a refugee from Afghanistan, after her photo of military photographer Steve McCurry, with piercing green eyes, was published on the cover of National Geographic. McCurry found her again in 2002 G.
In 2014, she appeared in Pakistan, but went into hiding when authorities accused her of buying a fake Pakistani ID card and ordered her deported. She was taken to Kabul, where the president hosted a reception for her at the presidential palace and handed her the keys to a new apartment.
Italy was one of several Western countries to evacuate hundreds of Afghans by air from the country after US forces left and the Taliban’s takeover of the country in August.
