Darwin’s Arch before the collapse

A natural rock formation located off an archipelago of islands in the Pacific Ocean has collapsed due to erosion.

On one of the Galapagos Islands, a natural volcanic formation known as Darwin’s Arch collapsed. Only two pillars remain of it, reports BBC News.-

As explained in the Ministry of the Environment of Ecuador, this was due to “natural erosion.”

Darwin’s Arch is the summit of a volcanic rock, immersed in the ocean for hundreds of meters. It is located near the uninhabited rocky island of Darwin in the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most popular diving spots in the world.

The Galapagos Islands lie 900 km west of the coast of Ecuador and are subject to the jurisdiction of this country. The four largest islands are home to about 30 thousand people.

The archipelago consists of 234 islands, islets and rocks of volcanic origin.

The arch and the island of the same name are named after the British scientist and naturalist Charles Darwin. It is believed that Darwin’s several weeks in the Galapagos Islands in September 1835 convinced him of the correctness of the theory of evolution.
