The fairgrounds are to be landscaped in autumn

Many plans for the Urfahran fairgrounds have already been made in the past: Now its redesign is picking up speed.

More details were announced yesterday: The area is to be planted with trees this autumn, says Mayor Klaus Luger (SP). The exact location of the trees is currently still the subject of intensive planning, as is the other measures on the site.

As reported, the planning work was awarded to the architecture collective GUT, backed by the Linz architects Andreas Henter, Markus Rabengruber, Martin Urmann and Gerald Anton Steiner. You are now challenged to realize your original project “An island for Linz” without an island, as there will be no arm of the Danube on the fairgrounds for reasons of water protection.

What is certain, however, is that there should be a bathing bay at the eastern end of the area, near the football field of SV Urfahr. Some permits (water law, nature conservation, etc.) are required for this, says Luger. Therefore, the start of construction is not expected before the coming year.

Back to the greenery and the trees, the mayor states that these should not be restricted to the peripheral areas. The central zone of the area should also be greener. Events traditionally take place there – and that should stay that way in the future, if the corona situation allows them again, says Luger.

With a certain flexibility in the organization, the holding of events such as the Urfahraner fair should not contradict the landscaping measures adapted to the space requirements. The project, which meanwhile bears the name “UFA” (a cross between Urfahr and Ufer), should also make ice skating and curling near the Danube possible in the future. There will be no classic ice rink, but a solution using plastic panels is under discussion.

According to Luger, a total of around four million euros are earmarked for the redesign of the area. Financial resources for the project are part of the “Pact for Linz”, the 65 million euro investment package with which the city of Linz wants to stimulate the corona-torn economy. This also includes the renovation of the Brucknerhaus and some school locations as well as the expansion of the vehicle hall of the main fire station. So far, the local council has decided on just under six million euros for the pact. (jp)
