LIVE Techno – This is indeed often considered a taboo, even though it is something that many people do. But scientists have put aside the embarrassment of learning about masturbation in a new study that investigates the origins of the practice.

While previous research has shown that masturbation is simply a byproduct of sexual arousal, the team from UCL claim that the behavior actually serves an evolutionary purpose, at least in men.

Launch Daily Mailtheir findings suggest that masturbation evolved in male primates to increase mating success and help avoid sexually transmitted infections or STIs.

However, scientists admit that when it comes to women, they still cannot understand the origins of masturbation.

Masturbation is not only practiced by humans, where masturbation is common in the animal world, especially in primates. However, until recently, how and when it became prevalent was unclear.

In the new study, the team compiled the largest-ever primate masturbation dataset, including information from nearly 400 sources.
