BRUSSELS, September 17 – RIA Novosti. The European Parliament does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Belarus and does not consider Alexander Lukashenko the legitimate president, according to the agreed text of the corresponding resolution following the plenary session of the EP. MEPs at the plenary session of September 14-17 discussed the situation in Belarus, the situation with Alexei Navalny and relations with Russia, as well as the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey, the launch of the European mechanism for the recovery of the EU’s economy and other issues. Massive opposition protests began throughout Belarus on August 9, after the presidential elections in which the current Belarusian leader won Alexander Lukashenko – according to the CEC, he got 80.1% of the vote. In the first days, the actions were suppressed by the security forces; against the protesters who did not agree with the results, they used tear gas, water cannons, stun grenades, and rubber bullets. According to official data, over 6.7 thousand people were detained in the first days. As reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic, hundreds of people were injured during the riots, including over 130 law enforcement officers. The authorities have officially confirmed the deaths of three protesters.Read all the news of Belarus on the website Sputnik Belarus >>
