The European Commission has criticized the possible expansion of US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was stated by the representative of the press service of the EC Peter Stano, reports RIA Novosti.
The European Union is strongly opposed to third-country sanctions against European companies doing legitimate business. “The extraterritorial application of sanctions is contrary to international law. European policy is determined in Europe, not in third countries, ”Stano emphasized.
He noted that if Washington applies a new package of restrictions, the EU will defend the interests of its companies by any legal means.
December 4th American Congress agreed new sanctions against the construction of the gas pipeline – they were included in the country’s draft defense budget for 2021. The restrictions apply to companies that provide insurance and certification services, as well as services for the modernization or installation of welding equipment on ships participating in the construction, for their modification or the supply of additional equipment.
