The Italian film “Sole” was awarded the European Discovery of the Year award for the best ‘first film’ from the Old Continent. The award was given in Berlin by members of the European Film Academy and FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics Euronews was able to speak with Carlo Sironi, director of the feature-length suit, and Sironi explained the European and universal dimension of his work.
“I try to give the idea that this story could happen anywhere. So my intention was not to work too hard on the Italian folklore of the story. The small town by the sea, where the plot takes place, could be in the north of France or elsewhere. This was, in a way, the atmosphere that I tried to give the story, “says Carlo Sironi, director of the film ‘Sole’.
The film tells the story of Lena, a young pregnant Polish woman who intends to sell her baby in Italy, and Ermanno, whose uncle, who wants to buy the girl, has commissioned to take care of Lena. It is the story of the meeting of two lonely and disenchanted souls. For Carlo Sironi, today, the idea of the so-called ‘national cinema’ is no longer essential.
“We do not have to forget where we come from as far as cinema is concerned. And it is impossible to forget it completely, but cinema travels much more than before. I mean that, now, I can see films from all over Europe. And from all over the world. Thirty years ago, this was impossible. I think the influence on directors today is much greater than before and it is something great, “adds the Italian director.
‘Sole’ was one of six works nominated for the award. His rivals included films from France, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Netherlands, Lithuania, and a work co-produced by France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
