The European Academy of Medicine incorporates the Veterinary Academy of Spain

Last June, the European Federation of Academies of Medicine (FEAM) and the Romanian Academy of Medicine organized in Bucharest the ‘Second European Conference on‘ One Health ’, as reported by Veterinary Journal.

In this meeting, the Royal Academy of Veterinary Sciences of Spain (RACVE) was invited to participate by the president of FEAM, George Griffin, as well as to take the necessary steps for a possible incorporation and become a member of the FEAM.

The president of the RACVE, Arthur Duckling, on behalf of the members of the Royal Academy, presented and defended the candidacy to join the FEAM. After the corresponding deliberations, the RACVE has been admitted into the European Federation of Academies of Medicine.

In this way, the RACVE will help deepen the concept of “One Health and they will work together.

The pandemic of COVID-19 has highlighted the need to adopt an ‘One Health integrated approach’, and my Academy hopes to contribute to FEAM policy work in this field. Developing treatments to respond to the current COVID-19 crisis should be the immediate priority of the biomedical community, but it will be important to investigate zoonotic disease and the origins of human virus infection to inform policy makers about the sanitary measures they should adopt to foresee similar outbreaks in the future, ”says Anadón.

The Spanish Academy has joined FEAM as its 22nd member. Its incorporation is key to consolidate FEAM’s work under an integrated One Health approach.

FEAM is the European group that brings together the National Academies of Medicine and the Medical Sections of the Academies of Sciences. The FEAM network is made up of 18 national academies representing more than 5,000 of the most relevant scientists in the European Union.
