The electric van is not allowed for entrepreneurs | Machine

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have no plans to buy electric vans. Not even now that the government is making the purchase of diesel vans significantly more expensive.

This is the conclusion of a survey conducted by the organization of entrepreneurs MKB Nederland among a thousand members. The government wants to reduce the use of diesel to reduce CO emissions2to limit emissions. To make diesels less attractive, entrepreneurs will have to pay a purchase tax, bpm, for a new 2025 combustion engine van. That makes a diesel-powered van about 11,000 euros more.

With taxes rising, the government wants to encourage entrepreneurs to buy an electric van. But the question is whether that goal will be achieved. The survey shows that only a small minority of 9% of entrepreneurs plan to buy an electric van in the next few years. The price increase for a diesel does not change that.

A million vans

In total there are around one million delivery vans in the Netherlands. Half of the entrepreneurs say they continue to drive longer with the old diesel; the other half are planning to buy used cars. And 9% think they will buy a new diesel.

In total, the government plans to raise € 2.2 billion more with bpm. In addition, the road tax for entrepreneurs will increase from 2025. They should bring in 500 million euros over five years.

Range too low

More than half of entrepreneurs say the electric bus is not yet suitable for their businesses. The range is too low, especially for companies carrying heavy loads with their buses. Furthermore, there are still too few places where buses can be quickly recharged.

Jacco Vonhof, president of MKB Nederland, now thinks that the government’s measures are nothing more than “an increase in the tax burden that must be removed as soon as possible”. MKB Nederland wants the purchase subsidy for electric vans to continue. According to the entrepreneurs, this is a more effective way to electrify the fleet.
