The arrival of the electric version of the Audi A6 already in the spring indicated the A6 e-tron concept. But the standard version of a large electric car is closer than many thought.
The management of the Volkswagen Group is promoting the electric drive on a large scale, which, in addition to the parent brand, is increasingly affecting other members of the group as well. This also applies to Audi, which plans to sell only electric cars from 2028. This will lead to their further development, including the large A6 model.
The arrival of the Audi A6 with electric drive has been speculated for a long time, which intensified this spring after the presentation of the A6 e-tron concept giving clear evidence of the effort to electrify this upper-middle-class model. So far, however, it has been said that the A6 will not see the electric version until the new generation. But in the end, it seems to be different.
A spokesman for the brand to the American Roadshow of the media website CNET confirmed that the serial Audi e-tron is already being prepared for 2023, with the proviso that it could be introduced as early as next year. As the current (fifth) generation Audi A6 has only been produced since 2018, a successor is not expected until the middle of the decade, which would indicate that the new A6 e-tron will be sold alongside the existing version. At least for a while.
The large electric car will be based directly on this year’s A6 e-tron concept presented at the Shanghai Motor Show. Its body suggests the look of future mass-produced Audi models and sends clear signals of how dynamic and elegant the high-powered cars with the four-circle logo will look., the carmaker wrote in an official press release about the premiere of the concept, which indicates that the serial car will be very close to it.
There will be a completely new technical basis in the bowels. Specifically, it is a platform PPE developed by Audi in cooperation with Porsche, which is designed for large (luxury and sports) electric cars. Its central element is a set of batteries in the floor between the axles, which, specifically in the case of the A6 e-tron concept, has a capacity of 100 kWh. Compared to MEB for compact electric cars, they differ, for example, by the use of an 800V electrical system or a more advanced chassis with five-element suspension at the front, multi-element at the rear and air suspension.
The Audi A6 e-tron will be the next step in expanding its range of four-wheel electric cars. The electric SUV Q6 e-tron has already been confirmed for 2022which is also to use the PPE architecture. In the future, the electric version should also be offered, for example, by the A4 model. And some the city electric car will probably also replace the A1.
