Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – China will impose sanctions on United States (US) entities participating in US arms sales to Taiwan. This was said by a spokesman for the foreign ministry on Monday (26/10/2020).
“Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense and Raytheon will be subject to sanctions,” spokesman Zhao Lijian told a news conference in the Chinese capital. Reuters.
Lockheed Martin is a manufacturer of military necessities such as the F-16, F-22 and F-35 series of stealth jets. Meanwhile, Boeing Defense is a unit of Boeing which is responsible for defense and aerospace.
Raytheon is a US military contractor. Sanctions related to the purchase of weapons worth $ 1.8 billion (IDR 26.4 trillion).
This is the latest increase in the heat of relations between the two countries. The US and China are at odds on many issues, including trade, technology and the South China Sea (SCS)
For China, Taiwan is part of the country even though Taipei rejects the claim. The US itself has become the main supporter of Taiwan despite withdrawing official recognition since January 1, 1979.
“This deeply disturbs China’s internal affairs, seriously damages China’s sovereignty and security interests … as well as the stability of the Taiwan Strait,” Zhao Lijian was quoted as saying last week.
“China will make a valid response and need to adapt to the development of the situation.”
There has been no US comment on this issue. However, Taiwan through Defense Minister Ye Den-fa thanked the US for helping its country improve its defense capabilities.
“Including a credible combat capability and asymmetric warfare,” he said.
