The appearance of a new variant of Covid-19, which is called the E484K variant, is the result of a mutation from the B117 variant. Spokesperson for the Covid-19 Handling Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito, explained that the E484K mutation that occurs in the spike protein is the same mutation as found in the South African and Brazilian variants.
“Based on the results of the research, this variant is more quickly transmitted. Therefore, the public is asked to adhere to health protocols in every activity carried out, as an effort to prevent transmission,” he said when answering media questions in the press statement on the development of the handling of Covid-19 broadcast on the channel. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin also confirmed that the vaccine used by the government was still effective against the virus strain from Covid-19.
He explained that the increase in cases recently experienced by European countries was due to a new strain of the Covid-19 virus. However, Budi said that with the high number of vaccinations, there was no increase in cases due to new strains.
Indonesia is currently in the eighth position as the country with the highest number of vaccinations. Among non-vaccine producing countries, Indonesia ranks fourth as the country with the highest number of vaccinations.
