The Dutch may get ‘a little more space at Christmas …

Until mid-January, there will be restrictions in the Netherlands to combat the corona virus. The Dutch Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge announced this at a press conference. But at Christmas the Dutch may already be given a little more space.

If the figures with the corona virus continue to fall, a cautious easing could possibly be implemented in mid-December. Dutch Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said on Tuesday evening that this will be viewed on December 8. The government therefore hopes to be able to provide more clarity about the possibilities around Christmas.

‘What we want to do is see in mid-December whether we can give a little more leeway if we are on level 2 indicators. That means ten ICU admissions (intensive care) per day or 3,600 new infections per day. Only then can we think about expanding something again. We expect this in mid-December. Then we can do something we want so badly again. ‘

The goal is to get to level 1. According to De Jonge, this is expected to be achieved in mid-January, if the figures continue to fall.

Partial lockdown

The press conference also confirmed that the extra strict measures announced two weeks ago will expire tomorrow evening. This means that the Netherlands will fall back on the partial lockdown that was announced on October 13. Theaters, museums, cinemas, music halls and amusement parks may reopen. The catering industry will remain closed for the time being.

According to Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the corona figures are going in the right direction. But there is room for improvement. Especially in supermarkets and other shops, people are better able to comply with the rules, says Rutte, and also at home. He called on the Dutch to celebrate the Sinterklaas party according to the rules – with no more than three guests.
