The Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen is hospitalized in serious condition after a bad fall at the end of the first stage of the Tour of Poland. Jakobsen, who is 23 years old and runs for the Deceuninck Quick-Step team, is currently in an induced coma, according to what the team leaders have said.
The accident occurred a few meters from the finish of the stage of Katowice, when in the final sprint the compatriot Dylan Groenewegen of Jumbo-Visma squeezed towards the Jakobsen barriers, causing him to slam violently, and then falling in turn on the ground together with other cyclists . Groenewegen has been disqualified and the UCI – the international cycling union – has released a communique in which he condemned the cyclist’s action and announced that other disciplinary measures will be taken against him.
