The dream of a messenger

The number of messengers has increased in recent years. WhatsApp, Signal, Threema, Telegram, iMessage and Facebook Messenger are just a few of the many examples. The desire for a uniform messenger is growing.

Beeper: Pebble founder wants to solve the problem

Eric Migicovsky, who some may still know as the Pebble founder, wants to tackle the problem with Beeper. All messengers should be united here. And yes, that also applies to iMessage. To be honest, the solution is… modest.

Beeper Messenger

If you pay 10 dollars a month for beeper, you can rent an old iPhone 4S with a jailbreak and the service is then activated there indirectly. Your new messages will be decrypted on the device and forwarded to Beeper. Another option is a Mac with special software that is always on.

This is certainly not a good solution for the mass market, but it’s a path that, according to Eric Migicovsky, Apple can’t do much about. With the other services it was easier, although of course you cannot use a native solution and you always have to build a bridge between the corresponding service and the beeper.

Beeper: The Trillian for modern messengers

The older users among you may still remember Trillian for desktop computers. Back then, the service wanted to solve exactly the same problem, only with ICQ and Co. Now Eric Migicovsky wants to achieve that too.

Beeper Bridge

I honestly don’t think Beeper will be a success. Who wants to pay $ 10 a month just to have WhatsApp and iMessage in one app? And whoever uses iMessage is usually in the Apple ecosystem anyway. An iMessage for Android would be nice, but not necessary.

Beeper is supposed to be more than just a chat platform when talking to TechCrunch Eric Migicovsky revealed that the office division (like a calendar) would also be interesting. I fear that someone has a beautiful and very big dream, but it will fail to come true.
