The drama on the Vuelta continues! Carapaz deprived Roglič of the leader’s red jersey

The 12-kilometer climb on Anglir, considered one of the most difficult in professional cycling, brought, as expected, a duel between the adepts for the overall victory. The steep hill apparently did not fit the current leader Roglič, who did not suffer a bigger loss only thanks to the help of his teammate from the Jumbo-Visma team Seppa Kusse, who was waiting for him in the steepest sections.

“It was too hard a climb for a sprinter,” said Roglič, the owner of a green jersey for the leader of the scoring competition. “I didn’t have the best day, but in the end I’m satisfied. Now we have a time trial, it will be very difficult. We’ll see after it,” he added.

Gaudu won the eleventh stage of the Vuelta mountaineering, Roglič remained in the lead

In the end, the Brit Carthy from the Education First stable had the most strength, moving to third place in the standings thanks to the first victory over the Grand Tour. “Winning a professional race is a dream come true, but winning a mythical climb on the Grand Tour can’t be any better,” said Carthy.

Russian Alexandr Vlasov, Spaniard Enric Mas and Carapaz finished 16 seconds behind him. Defending champion Roglič finished fifth with a loss of another 10 seconds, and because he was in the lead at the same time as Carapaz, he will go to the final week with the same distance.

To red after two days

Last year’s winner, the Gira d’Italia Carapaz, returned to the red jersey after two days, when he was replaced by Roglič thanks to his victory in the 10th stage. In a balanced standings, the third is Carthy with a gap of 32 seconds, the fourth is with a shortfall of 35 seconds Ir Daniel Martin.

“I remembered it (climb on Anglir) from 2017, it was incredible. I’m glad I can wear the red jersey again. It’s a reward for the whole team, now we will defend it in the time trial,” Carapaz reminded him.

The Czech mountaineer Jan Hirt held on to the best of the total of five climbs at the beginning of the final. He finally reached the finish line in 22nd place with a gap of 6:12 per minute behind Carthy and moved to the 40th place in the overall standings.

The final week of the Vuelta will start with a day off, followed on Tuesday by a time trial of 33.7 km. In it, Roglič will have a chance to return to the red, as he pays for a better rider against time than Carapaz.
