The doctors set out to wake Zanardi from artificial sleep

Doctors began waking seriously injured former Formula 1 pilot Alex Zanardi from artificial sleep. A clinic in Siena, where the four-time Paralympic winner is lying on a handbike after a serious accident, has announced that it will take several days to reduce the dose of sedatives. Afterwards, doctors at 58-year-old Zanardi re-examine to determine the severity of the consequences of a severe head injury.

Zanardi, who lost both legs in a car accident in 2001, has been in artificial sleep at a clinic in Siena since June 19. At that time, he crashed during a relay race on a handbike and crashed into an oncoming truck on the side.

In the accident, he suffered, among other things, serious head injuries and multiple bone fractures in the face. He has already undergone three complicated operations in Siena, the last one on July 6 was focused on facial reconstruction and lasted five hours. Doctors still describe his condition as very serious with an uncertain prognosis.
