The distribution of Covid-19 vaccines in the EU has not been proportionate; suffered – also Latvia / Article / LSM.lv

The distribution of Covid-19 vaccines in the European Union (EU) has been disproportionate – there are countries with more vaccines and there are countries with relatively fewer. The Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš (“New Unity”) announced this at a press conference after the government meeting.

According to him, it is understandable that Latvia is also among the countries that received proportionally fewer Covid-19 vaccines per certain population in the first quarter. However, the Prime Minister did not mention how much vaccine Latvia has not received.

At the same time, the Prime Minister acknowledged that the situation is different in each EU country. In some countries, vaccines are supplied in proportion to the population, and in a small number of countries, vaccines are supplied in proportion. Then there are a number of countries to which vaccines are delivered proportionally less, and the differences are different.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that he had talked to the prime ministers of the five countries on the question of how a “smoothing mechanism” could be set up to receive the missing vaccines.

Namely, there was a conversation with the governments of Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. There are other countries that are interested in this, “Kariņš explained.

14 million doses of Pfizer and BioNTech vaccines are expected to be delivered to the European Union shortly, and missing vaccines could be diverted.

Kariņš said that this will be one of the “big topics” at the upcoming EU Council meeting next week. “At the moment, it looks like this will be one of the topics to be talked about, discussed and, hopefully, decided,” Kariņš said.

This issue will also be addressed at the EU level by the Minister of Health Daniels Pavļuts (“For Development / For!”), As well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs (“New Unity”).
