Geneva – (dpa):
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced late Sunday that he had entered self-quarantine after coming into contact with a person who had tested positive for COVID-19.
Tedros wrote on Twitter: “I have been identified as a contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid-19. I am fine and without symptoms, but I will commit to self-isolation in the coming days, in line with WHO protocols, and work from home.”
He continued: “It is extremely important that we all comply with health guidelines. This is how we will work to break the chains of Covid-19 transmission, curb the virus, and protect health systems.”
Speaking from Geneva on Monday, Tedros urged leaders around the world to follow expert advice amid “an alarming rise in the number of cases and hospitalizations” in Europe and North America.
The former Ethiopian foreign minister, an infectious disease expert who took up his position at the World Health Organization in 2017, was at the forefront of global efforts to combat the pandemic.
