The development of an improved version of Anthem has been stopped

Bioware a while ago announcedthat they decided to end the effort to develop an improved version of the game. However, they will continue to keep it in operation in its current form. Bioware Austin executive producer Christian Dailey wrote:

“Friends,

in a spirit of transparency and closure, we wanted to share with you that we have made a difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (nicknamed Anthem NEXT). However, we will continue to maintain online services for the game in its current form.

Since the release of Anthe, the team has worked hard to gradually improve the game, releasing multiple updates that have brought various improvements and introduced new content to play. At the end of 2019, we expanded this effort and began working on a more fundamental restructuring of the game.

During development, we offered information revealing part of the team’s work through blogs and conversations with you on social media. It was inspiring for us to see positive reactions and feedback. I was very proud of the team’s work and looking forward to trying each new build.

However, 2020 was a year like no other, and although we are successful in advancing our game projects at Bioware, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity. Not everything we planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be fulfilled without exposing our teams to excessive stress.

I know this will be a disappointment to the Anthem community of players looking forward to the improvements we’ve been working on. It’s also a disappointment for a team that did a brilliant job. And for me personally, Anthem was what brought me to Bioware, the last two years of the most challenging and fulfilling experiences of my career.

Game development is difficult. Decisions like this are not easy. In the future, we want to focus precisely on our efforts as a studio and strengthen other Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles, while providing quality enhancements to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Thank you Anthem community for your passion and creativity. Your feedback and suggestions definitely help shape the direction of the team – and personally, your kindness and encouragement were really needed last year.

Please take care of yourself and be nice to you. Strong alone, stronger together. “

Christian
