The delegation of MEPs asked the EC to strengthen the monitoring of Bulgaria

The situation with media freedom and pluralism in the country remains worrying, President Sofia in ‘t Veld says

The monitoring group calls on the European Commission to strengthen the monitoring of Bulgaria and the audit of European funds, including the Mechanism for Recovery and Sustainability. This is stated in a statement of its chairman Sofia in ‘t Veld, distributed after the end of the visit of the MEPs to our country, a correspondent of BNR.

At the same time, the monitoring group understands the limited capacity of the caretaker government to meet a series of challenges. However, lawmakers are encouraged by the Sofia cabinet’s commitment to using the tools at its disposal. They will continue to closely monitor what is happening in Bulgaria.

The situation with media freedom and pluralism in the country continues to be worrying, Sofia in ‘t Veld said. According to her, the authorities should step up their efforts to improve the working environment and safety of journalists, as well as to guarantee their independence.

The high degree of media concentration and the lack of transparency in the allocation of money from the public budget and EU funds must be at the top of the political agenda, the statement said.

“Poverty in Bulgaria is shocking, it’s not like the climate, it’s the result of bad governance,” Sofia in ‘t Veld said after the visit to Bulgaria, noting that questions had been asked to the prosecutor’s office, to which no answers had been given.
