The death cult around Russian super soldiers keeps the war going. But something is very wrong with the hero stories.

Russian soldiers pass through the city of Mariupol. The city was razed to the ground when the Russians attacked.

Several thousand civilians were killed. In Russia they are hardly mentioned. But the Russian soldiers who died in the attack are celebrated as heroes.

Russian Major Andrei Kunakov was killed in the fighting. The brigade he belonged to helped destroy Mariupol.

Back home in Russia, the major is hailed as a super soldier. He is said to have committed great heroic deeds.

Family and friends hear that he rescued civilians and soldiers, and killed many Nazis.

Do Russians believe the stories of superheroes sacrificing for Putin? It can determine how long the war lasts.

Major Andrej Kunakov and his department helped destroy Mariupol.

Back home in Russia, he is hailed as a super soldier.

“For four days, Major Kunakov repulsed superior enemy forces,” writes the Kremlin-affiliated newspaper Rg.ru.

But the story is not true.

The Russian forces in Mariupol were numerically completely superior.

As chief of staff, the major should not really have been in the front line. The only thing we actually know is that the remains of the major were found in a burnt out vehicle.

In the occupied Mariupol, which his brigade helped to level the ground, a road is to be named after the major.

To promote patriotism and the will to fight in Russia, false hero stories about super soldiers are now being fabricated on a conveyor belt.
