Ivan Minkov, a Bessarabian Bulgarian who died in the fighting for Ukraine, lay under rubble for 4 hours after his unit was bombed. Due to the fighting, his comrades were unable to save him.
The 20-year-old man lost his life defending Chernigov. Residents of his hometown greeted him like a hero on his knees.

In Ivan’s native village – Chushmelia or Krinichnoe, an initiative has been launched to name a street after him, bTV correspondent Tanya Staneva said. The young man himself decides to go to the front. Otherwise, he had his dreams, like all young people – to start a family, but his destiny is different.
Due to the fighting, it was impossible to find his remains. This happened only after the withdrawal of Russian forces from northern Ukraine a month after his death.
During that time, his relatives were unaware of his fate and were looking for him because he was said to be missing and it was assumed that he may have been captured by the Russians, Staneva said.
Ivan is not the only Bessarabian Bulgarian currently fighting in Ukraine. About 300 of our compatriots from the Bolgrad region have joined the hostilities. One of them is even currently fighting in Mariupol.
There is information about other dead Bessarabian Bulgarians, but so far it cannot be confirmed.
“This war made the Bessarabian Bulgarians take sides. We stood aside for a long time. We are far from the events – in the south of Ukraine, and now Ivan died in the north of Ukraine. This war made us Ukrainians. We are Bessarabian Bulgarians, but we are also Ukrainian citizens. Many people volunteered not only in the territorial defense, but also went to the front, “said Tanya Staneva.
