The Czech sculptor Irena Sedlecká died in London

Sedlec has lived in the United Kingdom since 1967. Her second husband was the renowned sculptor František Bělský, the author of the parachute memorial plaque at the Prague Church of St. Cyril and Methodius or the bust of Prime Minister Winston Churchill in front of the British Embassy in Prague. In 2004, the Sedlec Medal received the Artis Bohemiae Amicis Medal for spreading the good name of Czech culture abroad.

During her artistic career, she created a number of monumental portraits and busts. One of the most significant achievements is the three-meter statue of Freddie Mercury, which has stood on the shores of Lake Geneva since 1996 in Montreux, Switzerland. Among the personalities she portrayed are also footballer Bobby Charlton, actor Richard Briers and the father of the jet engine Frank Whittle.

The Pilsen native fled in 1967 together with her first husband and three children from communist Czechoslovakia. In Britain, she later became a member of the Royal British Sculpture Society.
