The Czech Republic has abandoned plans for mandatory vaccination against COVID-19

Czech Prime Minister Petar Fiala said today that his government had abandoned plans to compulsory vaccination against COVID-19, so as not to increase division in society, Reuters and TASS reported.

“The government has decided that there will be no compulsory vaccination,” Fiala told a news conference. “This does not change our position on vaccination. It is undoubtedly the best way to combat KOVID-19, but we do not want to deepen divisions in society,” he said. Fiala said his center-right government saw no reason to introduce compulsory vaccination, as previous Czech rulers had planned in some sectors.

The Czech government is discussing on Wednesday vaccinations against COVID-19 to be mandatory for workers in key occupations and people in …

In December, the previous government ordered the introduction of mandatory vaccinations in March 2022 for staff in hospitals and nursing homes, for police, the military and some other professions, as well as for people over 60 years of age. This led to protests. The new government repealed the provision.

The change in policy comes at a time when the Czech Republic is recording peak levels of coronavirus infection. The health ministry said 28,469 new cases had been registered yesterday, the country’s highest daily number of infections since the pandemic began. At the same time, a decrease in hospitalizations was reported – yesterday they were 1635 compared to 1761 the previous day. The Fiala government has shortened quarantine and isolation deadlines and ordered mandatory testing of workers in companies this week.
