Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babiss told Nova that he intended to confirm the state of emergency at an extraordinary government meeting on Wednesday, but did not provide details on the nature of the restrictions.

In the Czech Republic, home to 10.7 million people, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection has risen to a record high in recent days, reaching 65,313. Of these, 615 were fatal.

Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic said after a meeting of his country’s crisis management team that the “extremely serious” situation required “very bold decisions”.

The Slovak government is also expected to confirm the state of emergency on Wednesday. This will be the second time it has been introduced in Slovakia to fight the new coronavirus pandemic.

As part of the state of emergency, it is planned to ban all sports and cultural events, as well as services, from October 1. Weddings and funerals will only be allowed if all participants can prove that they have had a negative Covid-19 test.

Restaurants, bars and cafes will be closed at 22:00. If people living in different households approach each other closer than two meters indoors, they will have to wear masks. Wearing masks is already mandatory indoors in Slovakia.

In Slovakia, with a population of 5.4 million, 9,343 infections have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 44 have been fatal. On Friday, the number of new infections in one day was 552, which is a new record.
