The Czech astrophotographer caught a picture of the day for NASA: The only total solar eclipse this year

There was only one total solar eclipse on Saturday. However, it was only seen from Antarctica. That’s why the film was titled “Total Solar Eclipse Below the Bottom of the World”.

To capture this unusual phenomenon, aircraft had to fly under clouds over the Southern Ocean. “This is a shot of Czech origin, showing a view of a total solar eclipse taken from a plane over the Southern Ocean. The eclipse itself lies low above the horizon in the direction of Antarctica, “said Horálek, who also reminded that this is the fifth photograph of the Institute of Physics, which NASA has chosen as the Astronomical Image of the Day.

NASA also pointed out a small point to the right of the so-called corona around the Sun, which is nothing more than the first planet in our Mercury system.

Horálek took part in a special flight of Chilean airlines in cooperation with astronomers from the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to take a unique photo. One of the purposes of the expedition was to acquire a unique audiovisual material for the documentary production of students of Multimedia Techniques at the Institute of Physics in Opava.

Another total solar eclipse will occur in April 2023, and a year later there will be another opportunity to see solar eclipses from North America.
