The culprit of Singapore’s Covid ‘Exploding’ to 1 month PSBB

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Covid-19 pandemic is still quite strong in Singapore. On Monday (27/9/2021), the Lion Country reported 1,647 new cases of Covid-19 infection with two additional deaths.

Indeed, when compared to the previous day, there was a slight decrease in additional cases. On September 26 the authorities found 1,939 infections.

However, the number of daily cases is still above the level of a thousand cases per day. According to JHU data, the average case a week is 1,441 new patients.

This still quite sharp increase is attributed to the development of the Delta Variant in the country. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said that the spread of Variant Delta was far above their prediction.

“It was transmitted through the community and the daily increase in cases was much faster than we expected. This spread happened before our plans were fully implemented and before our support system was fully in place,” Ong said at a press conference, citing Channel News Asia.

Furthermore, this explosion of infections alone has overwhelmed the Covid-19 response in the country. This can be seen from the handling of positive patients who are quarantined at home, where many patients have not received immediate treatment since announcing positive cases.

“The spike in cases has caused delays and we ask for your patience and understanding. We are streamlining our operations and will contact you as soon as possible,” said an official statement from Singapore’s Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, the competent authorities also adopted a regulation on tightening public mobility which came into effect on Monday (27/9/2021). The regulation itself regulates visitor restrictions in public places such as schools, offices, restaurants, and visits to residences.

“While doing so may not immediately reduce the number of new infections each day, it will allow us to slow the spread and avoid burdening our health workers,” said Gan Kim Yong, vice chairman of the Multi-ministerial Covid-19 Task Force.

The implementation of “Social Restrictions” like the “PSBB” that DKI once carried out, will be valid for 1 month until October 24. With this additional case, Singapore has reported a total of 89,539 cases of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic accompanied by 80 deaths.
