Al-Marsad Newspaper – SPA: His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Green Saudi Arabia – may God protect him – announced the launch of the second edition of the “Green Middle East Initiative Summit” on 7 November and the “Green Saudi Initiative Forum” will be held on 11 and 12 November in Sharm El-Sheikh, in the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the slogan: “From Ambition to Action “, in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27).

His Highness said: “I would like to thank His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian government for hosting the two events on the territory of the sister Arab Republic of Egypt this year, coinciding with the convening of the (COP27), which brings together the countries of the world under a single umbrella to promote global climate ambitions, stimulating joint action at the local, regional and global levels, which stems from the belief of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arab Republic of Egypt in the importance of collective participatory work to address the environmental and climatic challenges that the region and the world are witnessing ”.

To complement the success of the first Green Middle East Initiative summit hosted by Riyadh last year, the second edition of the Green Middle East Initiative will be held to shed light on the main climate challenges facing the region and their global dimensions, through a strategic platform that promotes joint cooperation, exchange of experience and discussion of ideas between interested heads of state and government and policy makers in the countries of the region, thus helping to accelerate the transition to a green economy and build a brighter future sustainable for future generations.

This year’s second edition of the Green Saudi Initiative Forum will also bring together a group of speakers, experts and thought leaders to discuss progress in implementing the Kingdom’s previously announced initiatives to tackle climate change. the whole world.

Information on the two initiatives

Interestingly, these two initiatives were launched by His Highness the Crown Prince – may God protect him – last year to strengthen the Kingdom’s environmental efforts in previous years in accordance with the Kingdom Vision 2030, in exchange for the earnest desire of the Kingdom to confront environmental challenges represented by high temperatures, low rainfall, high dust waves and desertification and as part of efforts to improve public health and improve the quality of life of citizens and residents.

Goals of the Green Saudi Initiative

The Green Saudi Initiative aims to plant (10) billion trees across the Kingdom over the next few decades and increase the percentage of protected areas to (30%) of the Kingdom’s total areas, as well as reduce carbon emissions by (278) million tons per year by 2030.

These national targets contribute to achieving the regional goals demanded by the Kingdom at the top of the Green Middle East Initiative, which is to reduce carbon emissions in the region by more than (10%) of global contributions, and to plant (50) billion trees in the region. according to a program considered the largest in the world for planting trees.
