The Covid-19 Pandemic Hinders Tuberculosis Control in Indonesia

Suara.com – Control tuberculosis (TBC) in Indonesia is currently experiencing challenges, due to pandemic Covid-19 which is endless.

Indonesia as one of the countries with the highest TB burden in the world, really feels how TB control is hampered due to hospitals and health facilities filled with Covid-19 patients.

“So during this pandemic, it seems as if TB is not a priority, because… lung doctor We also treat Covid-19 patients, the hospital is full of Covid-19 patients,” said Prof Tjandra Yoga Aditama, Professor of the Indonesian Faculty of Medicine, at the XVI PDPI National Congress 2021, Saturday (4/9/2021).

TB is still an infectious disease with a high mortality rate in Indonesia. It is estimated that 11 people die of TB every hour.

Therefore, TB control needs to be carried out comprehensively. Synergy between the central government, local governments, and professional organizations is important to achieve the TB elimination target.

Indonesia’s target is to eliminate TB by 2030. Of course, realizing this target is not without challenges,” said Dr. Siti Nadia, M.Epid, Director of Disease Prevention and Management from the Ministry of Health.

On the same occasion, Dr. Agus Dwi Susanto, Sp.P(K), Chairman of the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association (PDPI) said the role of pulmonary doctors in controlling TB is not only treating patients.

According to him, pulmonary doctors also have a role to provide health education, bridge communication between the central and regional health sectors, and continue to conduct research, research, and field studies which will later be published scientifically.

“PDPI as an organization consisting of doctors in the fields of Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine has always been committed to dealing with problems in the field of respiration including in the context of TB control by playing an active role in promotive, preventive and handling TB cases in accordance with standard treatment,” he explained.
