The coronavirus is weakening, says an epidemiologist from IKEM. He considers the release too hasty

“The virus is starting to weaken. But the infectivity is not decreasing. Every virus needs its host, if it kills its host, it will no longer be able to spread,” said the epidemiologist in show Shootout on the idnes.cz website

In addition, there are many respiratory viruses among us, so it will be important to be able to distinguish them with their autumn onset. For example, the concurrence of two diseases could be dangerous. The possible combination of common flu and coronavirus also scares doctors.

A possible mutation of the new virus into a more aggressive form cannot be ruled out. Even so, Smejkal rather reckons with the fact that the population will gradually develop immunity to coronavirus and it will gradually weaken. He himself would have preferred to become one of the ten diseases this winter that most people wave their hands at, so to speak.

Schools are not a big risk

The epidemiologist also assured that schools should not be so dangerous during the epidemic, although the opposite was claimed at the beginning. Once the holidays are over, children will normally sit on school desks, but with stricter hygiene rules with respect to government traffic lights for areas with different risk of infection.

“Children are not a risk group. I do not see a problem with that,” he explained, adding that when it comes to protecting pedagogical staff, who are usually older in the Czech Republic, they need to be provided with veils or respirators.

Smejkal also expressed support for wearing veils, which in his opinion is the simplest measure that the government can resort to, as it significantly reduces the risk of spreading the disease. “In my opinion, it is mainly an expression of consideration for my surroundings. I support the rule. My veil protects you, yours protects me,” he said.

In his opinion, covering the mouth and nose should still be a common rule in closed non-ventilated interiors. He considers a bar, for example, to be risky. He would therefore advise people to steam outside rather than indoors, at least this summer. But the Czechs are very impatient. Veils would have been left in all means of public transport, including trams, not just in the subway.

Smejkal is more pessimistic about the development of an effective vaccine against a new type of coronavirus. He doubts it could be available in the fall. However, he praised the right timing for the adoption of very strict restrictive measures, thanks to which the Czechia coped with the epidemic. Unfortunately, they were probably in too much of a hurry to release them.
