The Controversy Surrounding Latvian Government’s Purchase of a Private Plane

The call of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņas to evaluate the purchase of a private plane for the needs of the Latvian government caused a great stir in the public.

K. Kariņš did not agree with the criticism directed at him regarding the use of private planes while he was prime minister. The politician also advised the current Prime Minister Evikas Siliņa to use such an opportunity – private flights – and “continue this practice in order to be at the negotiating table”.

Political scientist, co-owner of the company “Media bridge” Filips Rajevkis comments on Kariņš’s proposal as follows: “I think we need three planes, because the American president flies with three planes plus a fighter escort. Well, it should be expensive and interesting for everyone to see, that a high Latvian official is coming. Seriously, I think this is completely absurd. If we are a Nordic country, we are talking about the green rate, about restrictions on business because of the green rate, and then flying with a private plane? That we still need to burn fuel to it would spit in society’s face. That’s why it’s resentful.”
