The Coll de Lli pass will host a tribute to the exiled Republicans

La Vajol (Girona), Feb 5 (EFE) .- The crossing to France of the Coll de Lli, in the town of La Vajol (Girona), will host a tribute to the Republican exiles who, in 1939, used this path of mountain to escape the Franco regime.

The General Directorate of Democratic Memory and the Exile Memorial Museum organize the event on the occasion of the celebration today Friday of the National Day of Exile and Deportation, instituted by the Generalitat in 2017.

The Minister of Justice, Ester Capella, will make part of the path that the Spanish Republicans followed to access the Coll de Lli, at 712.8 meters high, where the tribute will be held, this time without citizen participation due to the health emergency situation.

Later, Capella will go to the neighboring town of Agullana, where he will visit the Perxés farmhouse, where the Catalan president Lluís Companys stayed between the end of January and the beginning of February 1939, before heading into exile.

Along with Companys were more than three hundred people, including intellectuals, politicians, officials or members of the security forces, as well as his Basque counterpart, José Antonio Aguirre.

The President of the Spanish Republic, Manuel Azaña, and the President of the Cortes, Diego Martínez Barrio, as well as hundreds of soldiers and civilians, also crossed the border through the Coll de Lli. EFE
