The classroom of the future in the online University

The design of the classroom has been forced to adapt to the needs of students studying online. It must have both the technological resources of connectivity and access for all. And more specifically, you must have the resources that favor communication, collaboration and, of course, understanding in the first place of what is studied.

– When we speak of communication we refer, for example, to chat channels or forums, which allow both synchronous and asynchronous communication and in different formats: text, audio or videos.

– Collaboration is possible through digital spaces, micro classrooms, shared documents, online meeting rooms, which allow the participation of all or small groups to work on their projects or make their contributions.

– It is necessary to have multimedia and interactive resources that favor the understanding of complex processes or concepts.

The role of all components of the educational community must be much more active, there will have to be more responsibility in all roles. For example, being more and more expert teachers, both disciplinary and pedagogical, and in the domain of educational technology. Both teachers and students must have developed digital skills, there is no way to escape, it is the current literacy. For their part, students will have to be more enthusiastic about knowledge, the attitude of dependence on a teacher should be transformed into a proactive attitude in search of specialized advice from the teacher who must be there ready to stimulate the development of skills in the area of training. And of course, you must have a conducive learning environment / environment: classrooms that offer opportunities for all.

Training resources and spaces should be increasingly interactive, each time we will have to have technologies that allow communication, collaboration and understanding from a very experiential approach, each time we want to be “close” to what has been studied, to be able to “get under the skin” of, for example, the protagonists of history, one wants to be able to “be” in the laboratories where they are testing new inventions, to be able to “feel” in a classroom with students (in the case of education students) in a courtroom (law students), to be on the surgical operating table (the medical ones), and that is already being done. Through the use of virtual simulators, virtual laboratories and 3D environments that allow immersion through the screens in various learning scenarios. I think that soon we will be able to be a hologram (the teachers) and appear at our students’ house to give them some guidance (Like Princess Leia when she left R2-D2, in Star Wars). Much progress is being made in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to support training processes.

The use of learning analytics and artificial intelligence procedures will also have to be deepened and optimized. that can favor the personalization of skills training and the satisfaction of graduates.

We will have to learn to learn and find our own mastery in learning so as not to feel overwhelmed and crushed with technology but to have it as an ally, because everything is going at a fairly fast pace. It is a challenge for everyone!
