The Chilling Story of Margarita Street: Deserted Homes and a Decades-Long Murder Case

Margarita Street in the area of Lomas de San Miguel, City of Atizapan de Zaragoza, Mexico, looks deserted. Not many people are seen walking around in this area. Only occasionally a car passes at high speed towards the area of Villas de La Hacienda or Cuautitlan Izcalli.

Most residents in the area left their homes. I don’t know if I moved to the city or something, so this settlement looks deserted. Among the rows of residents’ houses, there is a house and shop owned by an elderly 76 year old man, Andres Filomeno Mendoza Celis, right on Block 37, Lot 19, Number 22.

The condition of the house behind the high fence was destroyed. You could see several piles of soil, sand and rocks in front of him. The main gate of Andres Mendoza’s blue house is chained and padlocked. On the door there was also yellow police tape and half-torn paper attached saying ‘No Entry’ and ‘No Parking’.

From El Heraldo Mexico’s observations on December 23 2023, to the left of the gate there is a rolling door of Andres Mendoza’s shop. The white shop door has green graffiti written ‘ni una mas’ (not one more). Underneath were scattered pieces of paper in the form of electricity, telephone and water bills.

What stands out is the row of pink and yellow wooden crosses. The crosses each bear the name of a woman. Among them are the names Sandra, Brenda, Valeria, Maria Lusia, Fabiola, Cristina, Estafany, Lupita, Rosalba, Maria, Flor, Ingrid, Gali and Alejandra.

Beneath it were lined up with a number of glass or plastic glasses with blackened burnt candles in them. These are the remains of a demonstration by city residents two years ago over the murder and cannibalism case committed by Andres Mendoza for two decades, namely between 1990-2021.
