The Chilean opposition has initiated impeachment proceedings against President Piner – Abroad – News

Piner “used his job for personal business,” said Congressman Thomas Hirsch, presenting the accusations in the House of Representatives as the first step in an impeachment process that could take several weeks.

On October 8, the Chilean prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into the transaction, which is recorded in the “Pandora’s Documents”, a study coordinated by an international investigative consortium of journalists on the secret treasures of politicians. The study shows that world politicians, including current and former heads of state and government, have hidden millions in offshore firms.

The Chilean prosecutor’s office is investigating the sale of the mining company Doming through a company owned by the children of Pinera in 2010, when Pinera was president for the first time.

Pinner, one of the richest people in Chile, has denied doing anything illegal and is confident that the courts will confirm his innocence.

The Chilean Congress, controlled by the opposition, must now decide whether to uphold or dismiss the allegations against Piner. A vote on it is expected to take place in the first week of November, AFP revealed a source in Congress.

If the allegations are upheld, the case will be referred to the Senate, which will have to act as a jury in deciding on the future fate of Pinera.

Pinera’s second term as president began in March 2018 and will end on March 11 next year.

Pandora’s Documents links Piner to the sale of Dominga to businessman and close friend of the president, Carlos Delano, for $ 152 million. Much of the deal is so in the British Virgin Islands. In addition, one of the terms of the agreement provided that the last payment would be made only if Dominga’s area of operation was not recognized as a protected area, as requested by the environmental organizations.

This decision falls within the competence of the President of Chile.
