The child from Sofia has flucron, not the terrible deltacron

A case of a hybrid infection in a 3-year-old child was confirmed by the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases. This is the so-called flucron – both influenza and omicron-variant of the delta virus.

The child in Sofia was diagnosed with coinfection with influenza virus A (H3N2) and SARS-CoV-2, the so-called flucron. The sample was diagnosed by PCR.

The influenza strain “Cambodia” is circulating in the country During the period March 18 – 24 in the reference laboratory “Influenza and ARI” with PCR test 14 influenza A (H3N2) viruses were detected in respiratory samples of 9 hospitalized patients from Sofia and Pazardzhik and in 5 outpatients patients from Stara Zagora, Ruse, Pernik and Blagoevgrad.

The first case of influenza strain “Cambodia” was registered in Bulgaria in December 2021. It was diagnosed in a woman who returned from France. Experts identify this flu virus as more dangerous, as it often causes complications that require hospital treatment.

On January 31, the first case of a child in Bulgaria was proved at the same time with influenza and COVID. Later in Yambol, where the little patient was from, 8 more suspicious samples were announced, but they turned out to be only with the flu. According to local doctors, the children suffered from the flu more severely than the corona infection.

However, the flu slowed down and did not occur until the beginning of the month. There were delays throughout Europe due to measures against the pandemic, explained Prof. Todor Kantardzhiev. Again, due to the measures last year, there was no flu season. Now the morbidity has gone up, because after 1 year without the flu, the immunity in the society has dropped, the professor explained.

Last week, the NCIPD reported a 50% increase in acute respiratory diseases on average for the country, and in Blagoevgrad, where a flu epidemic was declared, the number of patients increased 9 times to 660 people per 100,000 population. The incidence jumped sharply in the Silistra region as well. Growth is also reported in Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv, Ruse, Stara Zagora and Shumen.

Currently, the flu mainly affects children under the age of 10, doctors say. It is in them, as in the elderly, it is more severe, and the most typical symptom is the acute onset with a rise in temperature to 38-39 degrees. It is also characterized by pain in the eyeballs and dry, irritating cough in the trachea. Light irritation and muscle aches often occur. The condition is more acute, but passes in 5-7 days, experts say.

Although relatively severe in young children, the flucron has no potential for a deadly epidemic. The severity comes from the flu virus, and the omicron is more contagious and sticks to almost all common infections, say GPs. This is not the terrible deltacron from Cyprus, which carries the stickiness of the omicron and the malignancy of the delta variant, and which was considered the great danger of a fading pandemic. No case of the Cypriot version has been reported in Bulgaria so far.
