The Capital Moves, Sri Mulyani Explains the Fate of Government Buildings in Jakarta

Jakarta

Draft Law on The nation’s capital (RUU IKN) has been approved as law in the plenary meeting of the DPR RI today. This means that the official center of government can move from Jakarta to East Kalimantan (Kaltim).

Then what about the fate of government buildings in DKI Jakarta? Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the use of these assets was important for the construction of the new capital city so that it would not be wasted.

“Utilization of State Property is important, this complex in Jakarta and the consolidation of various buildings in the current capital city, namely Jakarta. This will be a critical process which will later be translated into a more detailed master plan for IKN development, “said Sri Mulyani at a press conference at the DPR RI Building, Jakarta, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

Assets for Rent

Director of State Property, Directorate General of State Assets (DJKN) of the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu) Encep Sudarwan once said that to fund IKN development projects originating from the APBN, the government would use money from state assets. Especially assets located in Jakarta.

State assets in Jakarta, which consist of ministries and institutions (K/L) buildings, to the state palace, are planned to be leased to finance mega-projects. IKN.

“We are optimizing the assets in Jakarta so that we can get funds for development in the new capital city. We don’t always sell them, we can also work together by being given 30 years or several years, the money will be used there,” he said in a media briefing DJKN, Friday (11/26/2021).

Jakarta is Proposed to remain a Special Region

Chairman of the Special Committee for the IKN Bill, Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tanjung, suggested that Jakarta should remain a special area even though it is no longer the capital city. His party wants Jakarta to be given special attention because it has a history.

“We all propose that Jakarta should still be called a special area, but certainly not the capital city anymore because Jakarta has a history, infrastructure is quite adequate, facilities are quite complete.

Therefore, there will be changes to the law on Jakarta which will be discussed by the government and the DPR RI. “Jakarta must be a special area, what will be prepared by the government in particular,” he said.
