The burnt Kaunas spruce was reborn as a phoenix from the ashes: today it looks completely different

The team of Jolanta Šmidtienė, the artist decorating the main Christmas tree of Kaunas for 13 years, did a job that seemed impossible at first glance.

It has been possible to restore the ornamentation of Kaunas devastated by fire in a very short time, and already on Monday the spruce will be as charming as during the celebration of its lighting.

During the night from last Friday to Saturday, the part of the city near the City Hall was hit the hardest after the liquidation of the burning liquids and the burning of the Kaunas spruce. Police officers detained the 38-year-old suspect in a car, who was taken to a special treatment facility due to suspicions about his actions.

Arriving at the scene of the disaster on Saturday Kaunas municipalities representatives feared that the restoration of the city’s festive decoration could take a long time. There are particular fears about how to fix a fire-destroyed electrical installation that supplies electricity to thousands of small light bulbs.

But a small miracle happened. Already on Saturday afternoon, the decorations of the spruce were lit, and a couple of hours before midnight the garland was covered with garlands and touched by fire. Before that, the burnt spruce branches were removed and replaced with new ones.

Creator of Kaunas Christmas tree J. Šmidtienė portal Delphi mentioned that a really titanic job had been done, her team members worked two days without sleep, maybe only two hours off.

“We did what seemed impossible. It was very difficult to repair the damaged electrical part, but we succeeded, ”said J. Šmidtienė.

According to the artist, after covering the place destroyed by fire with new spruce branches on Saturday and decorating it with garlands, other elements of the decor are now being installed – illuminated curves and this year’s Kaunas spruces accented with colorful butterflies. They are remanufactured by laser cutting the plastic film.

J. Šmidtienė stated that all the works are planned to be completed already on Sunday evening. Only a few big butterflies will be attached on Monday and the spruce will be as charming again as it was on the day of its lighting.
