The blue coffin, the mirror and the silent guests. Latvian horror stories staged in the Daugavpils / Diena theater

By the way, there are not so many similar stories in Latvian literature. Daugavpils stage actress Kristīne Weinštejna knows how to say that American and Western writers have very prolifically written many terrifying stories about ghosts, vampires, monsters that promise no good and threaten to kill. The fantasy world is also home to evil dragons and gnomes, not to mention alien mystics. “The topic is unusual. When we started working on it, we concluded that Latvians are calmer: there are no snakes or spiders, but the biggest horrors are related to graves, which are not so scary, moreover, you can often live with the supernatural in them, they sometimes even make friends, “says K. Weinstein. Director Georgijs Surkovs offered the actors six stories by Latvian authors from different eras. Alexandra Green will come to life on stage Silent guests and the life story of Vecāri Indrikis, Mirdzas Bendrupes Elena, Viestura Reimer mirror, Vladimir Kaijak Vision and Ralph Cockin The story of the blue coffin of the Engure cemetery. Danger often lurks in a seemingly safe environment, in close people or in the mental games of the character himself, but each story is at the center of human feelings and relationships, which can sometimes lead to terrible events, other times to save them. Perhaps the supernatural and the frightening do not always come with evil intentions, but to warn and protect, but fear makes you run blindly into the embrace of doom? Actors Zanda Mankop, Agnese Laicāne, Jūlija ļaha, Egils Viļumovs, Ritvars Gailums, Marħers Eglinskis and Kārlis Tol will live in the characters of the stories. Kristine Weinstein works in three stories, and the most interesting seems to be V. Kaijak’s Vision. “I act alone on stage for a long time, I face my inner fears”.

The creative team, while creating the visual design of the production, adhered to the principle of eco-theater, giving a second life to the ancient things on stage: old furniture and wooden boards, used clothes and costumes from the warehouses. Shows Latvian horror stories the set designer is Andris Eglītis, costume designer – Inga Bermaka, lighting designer – Sergejs Vasiļjevs. The musical design of the production was created by composer Platons Buravickis. The closest show to the Daugavpils theater is on November 6th.
