The list of those absent in the men’s table at the US Open is prominent. In addition to defending champion Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will also be absent from the “Big Apple”. The two long-term rivals are grappling with injuries and ended the season prematurely.
It is therefore clear that there will not be a duel between Federer and Nadal in New York in 2021. Because hard to believe: Although the Basel bidder and the Mallorcan have played 14 games at the Grand Slam level of their 40 duels – they never met at the US Open.
Last chance in 2022?
There are several reasons for this: For many years, Federer and Nadal were the two top seeded players in different halves of the tableau and never made it to the final together. Later, early defeats or even tournament waivers prevented a possible duel.
And so the tennis world has to come to terms with the fact that the Federer – Nadal affiche will never exist at the US Open. After all, it is in the stars whether the duo will be at the start again in 2022 (or later).
