The second semifinal of the Songfestival would actually take place on Thursday evening in Rotterdam Ahoy. Because the event had to be canceled due to the corona crisis, the AVROTROS comes with an alternative. The Best Singers invites former candidates and other artists to play well-known records from the European music event.
Lenny Kuhr, who won the Eurovision Song Contest for the Netherlands in 1969 with The troubadour, takes care of one of the performances. Remarkably, she was not the only winner in Madrid at the time. The entries from France, Spain and the United Kingdom scored exactly the same number of points and thus shared first place with Kuhr. The 1970 edition was then held in Amsterdam.
Also singer Maribelle appears on stage during The Best Singers. In 1984 she became only thirteenth in the Eurovision Song Contest with I love youbut nevertheless her song grew into a classic. Franklin Brown and René Froger also perform. The former finished seventh in 1996 The first time, a duet with Maxine. Froger was with the Toppers the 2009 entry, the one with the song Shine got no further than the semi-finals.
In addition to several former candidates, Kim-Lian van der Meij, Thomas Berge and Emma Heesters can also be seen with their own performances. Every artist sings a well-known Dutch Song Festival song.
The Best Singers Song Contest is presented by Edsilia Rombley. She broke through in 1998 with her Eurovision entry Heaven Earth. In 2007 she participated for a second time On Top of the World. For the 2020 Song Contest she would provide the presentation together with Chantal Janzen and Jan Smit.
