The beach libraries, which will provide books to take home, return to Poniente and El Arbeyal

The beach libraries will return this summer after the two-year pandemic break. Users of the Poniente and El Arbeyal sandbanks will be able to enjoy this service from July 1. Next Monday, June 27, the assembly of the booths will begin, so that they come into operation the following Friday. The book loan service, which will cover all ages, will run until August 31.

In this way, a summer classic from Gijón returns, such as the municipal offer so that beach users can enjoy reading. One of the novelties of this edition is that the loan will be extended to households. Users will not only be able to enjoy the books during that day, but they will also be able to take them home, with the same system as in the municipal library network. The activity was paralyzed by the pandemic. On the one hand, due to the capacity limitations of the sandbanks, and on the other, due to the restrictions caused by the covid, such as sharing books and avoiding contacts, as well as crowds of people in these spaces, which, together with the book loan, also had activities for children, either reading or drawing.

The Municipal Foundation of Culture recovers in this way the beach library service, which will be open to the public between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. in the morning, and in the evening from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Starting Monday, June 27, municipal workers will begin preparing the booths. And they will also close the exact number of copies that will be offered for both children and adults, which in editions prior to the pandemic exceeded 400 copies.

It will not be the only proposal that will take place this summer, since the municipal network of libraries will offer different activities and workshops, for which you will have to register in advance. The centers of La Calzada, Contrueces, El Coto, El Llano and El Natahoyo, with the motto “Libraries are for summer”, will bring different proposals to children and young people.

In La Calzada, it will be through the “EVA Project: The Survivors”. In Contrueces, the theme will be comics, with a workshop. In El Coto, on the other hand, children’s theater will be the protagonist, while in El Natahoyo this activity will also be available along with another that receives the title of “Game of dilemmas”. For its part, in El Llano, the proposal that will be offered is called “Those crazy little ones”. The Gijon summer, in this way, is recovering all the established activities, and that were stopped by the pandemic, around books, concerts, workshops, activities, festivals or exhibitions.
