The Basque Government announces the closure of the ‘vacundromos’ after progress in the vaccination process

The ‘vacunadromes’ come to an end in the Basque Country. The Basque Government will undertake in a “short” term a reorganization process of vaccination points against covid-19, in order to adapt them to the current situation and after the “success” of the system of large vaccination centers, which, however, imply a “enormous logistical and organizational effort”, as explained by the Minister of Health, Gotzone Sagardui.

The counselor has resumed this Wednesday, after the summer break, her weekly appearances before the Health Commission of the Basque Parliament to report on the evolution of the pandemic.

Sagardui has highlighted that the epidemiological situation has changed in an “important” way regarding his last parliamentary appearance before the holidays, which took place on July 21.

That day, the cumulative incidence rate of covid in 14 days was 682 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure that continued to climb until reaching 873 cases on July 30. The data provided this Wednesday by the Department of Health places the current rate at 312.81.

“We are doing well, but the pandemic is still with us, It infects many people, a percentage of whom have to be hospitalized, and unfortunately there are people who die, “said the counselor, who recalled that in the last week 25 people have died in the Basque Country due to the coronavirus.

“OPTIMISM” AND “PRUDENCE”

Sagardui has stated that there are reasons for “optimism” given the improvement of epidemiological data, but he has reiterated his call to maintain “prudence” and preventive measures, because the pandemic “continues to claim lives.”

In his speech, he highlighted the advances in the vaccination process, and has indicated that 87.3% of the citizens of the Basque Country over the age of twelve have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 79.8% have completed the vaccination schedule.

As he explained, if the current rate is maintained, the vaccination process could be completed for the “bulk” of the population over twelve years “in a few weeks.”

The counselor has stated that the large vaccination centers enabled in recent months by Osakidetza they have been “a success” that, however, implies “a huge logistical and organizational effort”.

Sagardui has affirmed that the target population pending to be vaccinated “is shrinking rapidly”, and has announced that in a “short” period a process of “reorganization” of the vaccination points will begin, in order to “accommodate them to the new situation”.
