The BARCELONA HUB OF ART, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY is born

¿QWHAT IS THE BARCELONA HUB OF ART, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY?
An initiative launched by nine Catalan institutions that will promote research, training, dissemination, transfer and production programs in the fields of science, art and technology.

¿QWHICH INSTITUTIONS ARE PARTICIPATING?
The Open University of Catalonia (UOC), the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the Fira de Barcelona, the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), Barcelona Tech City, Hangar, the New Art Foundation and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). The project is transversal and will be developed with a model of shared governance and the support of institutions such as the Barcelona City Council, the Catalan Government and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce.

¿QWHAT OBJECTIVES DOES IT HAVE?
Explore and develop the links between art, science and technology to strengthen the digital transformation of society and make Barcelona a global pole of study in this field; also interconnect and promote collaboration between sectors and institutions to take advantage of the potential of joint work in the sectors of art, design, science and technology.

BY QWHAT IS THE BARCELONA HUB?
Because in creative processes – whether in the development of experimental or applied arts, or in industrial products – there are no borders, naturally. Therefore, fostering relationships between them can provide valuable knowledge when it comes to overcoming the challenges of digital transformation, in these months when the pandemic has shown the contribution of digital technologies to social development.

Many agents work in the Catalan capital bringing together art, design, science and technology (research centers, universities, exhibition spaces, centers of artistic production or innovation…) but they have been doing it separately; this project wants to articulate their collaboration.

¿QWILL FRUITS GIVE?
The participating institutions will work on transversal programs to promote research, production, dissemination and transmission of knowledge and training on the interconnections between the artistic and scientific-technical fields.

In addition to promoting the advancement of knowledge in interdisciplinary fields, residencies for artists will be promoted in scientific, social and educational infrastructures and artistic production and citizen participation will be facilitated. In addition, activities will be organized and the necessary collaborations will be structured to transfer artistic and technological knowledge to the industry, encourage it and facilitate new business opportunities.

IN QWHAT SPACES WILL BE DEVELOPED?
The so-called Artech Hub will have a hybrid dimension and will take place on the Internet and in physical spaces, such as creation centers, scientific infrastructures, research centers, companies and festivals related to art, science and technology.

Fira de Barcelona has made available to the Artech Hub part of the Palau Alfons XIII, in order to connect the great technological fair events in Barcelona with the artistic and creative community of the city.

This palace is located in the surroundings of a group of cultural facilities on the Montjuïc mountain, such as the MNAC, the Fundació Mies Van der Rohe, the Fundació Miró, CaixaForum, the Museum of Archeology of Catalonia and the Mercat de les Flors, which that will create synergies with these institutions.
